Frequently Asked Questions — FFKM O-Rings
What is FFKM perfluoroelastomer?
FFKM (Perfluoroelastomer) is the highest-performance sealing elastomer available. With near-complete fluorine substitution, it combines the elastic behaviour of rubber with chemical inertness approaching that of PTFE. Oringo carries HPSealing® and EFSealing® grades, including Perfluoroether (FFKM-PFPE) compounds rated to 327 °C.
What temperature range can FFKM o-rings handle?
Standard FFKM o-rings operate from −15 °C to +300 °C. Perfluoroether (PFPE-cured) grades extend this to +327 °C — the highest continuous operating temperature of any elastomeric seal. Bisneopentyl (BN-cured) grades offer slightly better low-temperature performance down to −25 °C.
What chemicals is FFKM resistant to?
FFKM is resistant to virtually all industrial chemicals: concentrated acids (HNO₃, H₂SO₄, HCl, HF), concentrated bases, ketones, esters, aldehydes, amines, steam, plasma, and solvents that destroy all other elastomers. It is broadly considered chemically universal for industrial sealing purposes.
What are typical applications for FFKM o-rings?
FFKM o-rings are used in semiconductor wafer fabrication (plasma etch chambers, CVD reactors), pharmaceutical bioreactors and CIP systems, chemical processing with concentrated acids or exotic solvents, aerospace propulsion, and oil and gas downhole tools where extreme temperatures and chemically aggressive media rule out every other elastomer.
